June 4, 2015

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) today released the following statement regarding Amtrak President and CEO Joseph Boardman’s statement to the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee that positive train control will be in place for the entire Northeast Corridor by the end of the year:

“I welcome the announcement by Amtrak’s CEO regarding the implementation of positive train control in the Northeast Corridor, along which I regularly travel, as do my constituents and colleagues. There is no doubt that this much-needed speed control system will bolster safety and help prevent future tragedies.

“The tragic derailment of Amtrak train 188 served as an important reminder that if we, as a nation, are to meet our responsibility of ensuring and enhancing public safety, we need to invest in our infrastructure. Long-term investment in our nation’s infrastructure is essential for achieving economic growth and competitiveness and for protecting our communities. We must make it a priority to ensure modern, safe, and reliable infrastructure that reflects the greatness of this nation.”
