Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) today released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 2353, Two-Month Highway Trust Fund Extension. Federal surface transportation programs were set to expire on May 31, 2015. The bill extends these programs for two months, through July 31, 2015.

“Long-term investment in our nation’s infrastructure is essential for achieving economic growth and competitiveness. The unwillingness of Republicans to address our very real infrastructure crisis only compounds the problem, costing American jobs and undermining our economy.

“I support a long-term, six-year bill to provide much-needed certainty and stability for investment in transportation infrastructure. That is the bill I wish we had passed today. However, I voted for this extension because, if these surface transportation programs expired, federal assistance to state and local governments for necessary transportation improvements would immediately cease.

“Only a long-term bill that significantly invests in our transportation infrastructure will ensure that states can plan for projects that will grow our economy and create well-paying jobs for our workers.”
