Payne Statement on Situation in Ferguson

Aug 15, 2014

Newark, N.J. – Today, Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) released the following statement regarding the death of Michael Brown and the protests in Ferguson, Missouri:

“This has been a challenging week for the people of Ferguson, Missouri and our nation.  Yet again, another young life was cut short much too early, and the unrest that has unfolded in Ferguson is a reminder that we still have a long way to go to achieve Dr. King’s Dream that people of all races and creeds will one day walk hand-in-hand peacefully.  Our Constitution guarantees the First Amendment right to peaceably assemble. I do not condone violence, but I do support the right of those who have experienced injustice to make their voices heard.  I also support President Obama’s call for a thorough and proper investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of Michael Brown. My thoughts and prayers go out to Michael Brown’s family and to the people of Ferguson.”
