Payne Statement on the Passing of Former Congressman William H. Gray

Jul 2, 2013

Newark, N.J. – Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) released the following statement on the passing of former Congressman William H. Gray:

“With the passing of former Philadelphia Congressman William H. Gray, we have lost a true innovator and leader in the fight for justice. Born during the years of racial disenfranchisement in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he was a humble religious leader, peacemaker, and inspiring fighter for racial equality.

“Congressman Gray’s remarkable accomplishments as the first African-American Chairman of the House Budget Committee and Majority Whip Leader have paved the way for others to follow. His fight to end educational disparities allowed him to step down from his position in Congress and become the President of the United Negro College Fund in 1991.

“Although I did not have a personal relationship with Congressman Gray, I am thankful for his tireless years of civil service and trailblazing leadership.

“My condolences and prayers go out to his family during this time. Congressman Gray will certainly be missed.”
