Payne, Jr. Statement on Civil Rights Settlement between Justice Department and Newark

March 30, 2016

Newark, N.J. – Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) released the following statement in response to the settlement between the U.S. Justice Department and Newark to reform the city’s police department:

“I welcome this settlement to bring accountability to the Newark Police Department. This is long overdue. Today’s announcement is an opportunity to restore the trust of Newark residents in our city’s police department and to end discriminatory profiling by law enforcement. As Newark begins to advance community policing, I will keep pushing at the federal level to advance collaborative relationships between police and the communities they protect.”
