Washington, D.C. – Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) released the following statement on the shooting at Charleston, South Carolina’s historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church:

“The tragedy that occurred in Charleston has caused overwhelming grief throughout our country. It is impossible to comprehend how the lives of nine people—nine worshipers who had gathered together in prayer at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church—were cut short in such a horrific and senseless act.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families at this difficult time. I stand with the rest of the nation in denouncing this massacre and in calling for swift justice. And although my heart aches, I am confident that the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, and the entire Charleston community, will persevere, drawing strength from their enduring faith and the support of our entire nation.”
