Payne, Jr. Celebrates 81st Anniversary of Social Security Being Signed into Law

Aug 12, 2016 Issues: Seniors

Newark, N.J. – Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) today released the following statement marking the 81st anniversary of the enactment of the Social Security program, signed into law by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on August 14, 1935:

“For 81 years, Social Security has given Americans peace of mind that they will be able to retire in dignity and avoid poverty in case of a disability. Today, more than 1.5 million New Jersey seniors and families depend on Social Security as a source of security and stability. Democrats are committed to protecting and strengthening this vital lifeline for current and future beneficiaries. We must always honor this promise to our fellow Americans. That is why I have cosponsored legislation to increase Social Security payments and why I staunchly oppose efforts underway by Congressional Republicans to cut this critical program.”
