Payne Celebrates Court Decision to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage in New Jersey

September 27, 2013

Newark, N.J. – Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) released the following statement after a New Jersey state court ruled in Garden State Equality v. Dow that the state must allow same-sex couples to marry:

“Today we celebrate equality in New Jersey as the court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage in the state is long overdue. Currently, thousands of couples in New Jersey are denied the equal protection under the law and the benefits that they deserve. Many have fought long and hard for true equality and basic civil rights, and today is a tremendous triumph. I strongly urge the state to implement the court’s ruling without hesitation and without delay. Although there is still so much more work to be done to ensure that every American is granted full equality, I am very happy for the people of New Jersey that this day is finally here.”
