Washington, D.C. — Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. supported a bill today to ban discrimination based on a person's hair.

The bill, the Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair (CROWN) Act of 2022 (H.R. 2116), would prohibit discrimination on the basis of hair texture or hair styles commonly associated with a particular race or national origin. It would be added to areas of the law where discrimination on the basis of race or national origin is prohibited already, such as employment, education and housing.

"I was proud to vote for the CROWN Act," said Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. "Your ability to perform a job should not be determined based on hair style or hair texture. I will always support bills that provide opportunities for Americans and create more equality nationwide."
