Washington, D.C. — Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. joined 75 students in the New Jersey Construction Pre-Apprenticeship training program today to tour the $2.7 billion Terminal One Redevelopment project at Newark Liberty International Airport.

The students were there as part of the Port Authority's three-year agreement to sponsor training programs in Bergen, Essex, Middlesex and Union County vocational-technical schools, all located within the Port District. The programs are part of the Port Authority's commitment to strengthening the region's workforce and prepare students for jobs in unionized construction trades. Some of the students on the field trip attend the Donald M. Payne, Sr. School of Technology, named after the Congressman's late father.

Congressman Payne, Jr. said he was proud of the Port Authority's commitment to the next generation of trade workers.

"The pre-apprenticeship program is what we need to educate the youth of today about workforce opportunities," said Congressman Donald Payne, Jr. "The fact that this program was established through the school that bears my late father's name is testament to my family's legacy of fighting for good union jobs."
