Rep. Payne, Jr. Co-Sponsors Justice in Policing Act

Washington, D.C. — Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. issued the flowing statement today regarding the Justice in Policing Act.  The bill (H.R. 7120) would establish a national standard for the operation of police departments, mandate data collection on police encounters, reallocate funds to transformative community-based policing programs, streamline federal law to prosecute excessive force, and establish independent prosecutors for police investigations       

“I co-sponsored this bill because it is time to take federal action to stop police brutality.  For decades, we have seen report after report about systematic racism in local law enforcement.  Every year, we have more deaths in the black community from police actions.  But nothing is done.  Enough is enough.  I am proud of my colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus for their leadership on this bill.  I look forward to voting for it soon so we can bring more accountability and transparency to law enforcement.  We need to make sure we are policing the policemen.”
