Payne co-sponsored legislation for background checks on gun purchases

U.S. Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. has cosponsored bipartisan legislation to help prevent guns from falling into the hands of criminals and the mentally ill. Expanding the existing background check system to cover all commercial firearm sales, H.R. 1565, the Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act of 2013 ensures that criminals, terrorists, and the dangerously mentally ill cannot slip through background-check loopholes that endanger the safety and rights of every American.

Gov. Chris Christie today vetoed a bill that would have required his administration to get the state Legislature's approval to go ahead with a plan to privatize parts of the New Jersey Lottery. Payne Jr. (D-10th Dist.) called it "absolutely astonishing" and said "the people of New Jersey deserve transparency."

he Tenth Annual Essex County Walk to End Hunger, beginning in Washington Park in Newark and ending at the Federal Building, drew hundreds of supporters from the community and local food pantries to raise money and awareness. Food Pantries in the MEND consortium fed over 80,000 in 2012.
