Payne, Jr. Introduces Bipartisan National Men’s Health Week Resolution

June 15, 2016

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10), co-chair of the Congressional Men’s Health Caucus, today introduced a resolution in support of National Men’s Health Week, from June 13 through Father’s Day on June 19. The bipartisan resolution encourages men to set an example for their families by engaging in preventive health care, something too many men fail to do.

“Too many men do not take care of their health. It’s no surprise then, that men die younger and have higher rates of illness than women,” said Congressman Payne, Jr. “This week, National Men’s Health Week, we aim to save lives by raising awareness of male health challenges and empowering boys and men to make smart health decisions to tackle them. It’s time to end this silent crisis.”

“Medical issues that affect men can often be detected early enough to drastically increase survivability,” said Congressman Markwayne Mullin (OK-2), co-chair of the Congressional Men’s Health Caucus and co-sponsor of the resolution. “Men’s Health Week is a great time to raise awareness for conditions like prostate and colon cancers, which impact an alarming number of men’s lives every year. Men need to take the time for annual physicals and checkups to make sure that we stay healthy for ourselves and our families.”

“We are excited that Reps. Donald M. Payne, Jr. and Markwayne Mullin have again sponsored a resolution recognizing Men’s Health Week,” said Brandon Leonard, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Men's Health Network. “Through their leadership of the Congressional Men’s Health Caucus, they are bringing much-needed awareness of boys’ and men’s health both to Capitol Hill and the general public.”

Despite advances in medical technology and research, men continue to die at higher rates of nine of the ten leading causes of death. Men also have a have a lifespan five years shorter than women and are half as likely as women to seek preventive care.
