Payne Celebrates Supreme Court's Decision to Strike Down DOMA

June 26, 2013

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) released the following statement in response to the decision by the Supreme Court of the United States today striking down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA):

“With today’s Supreme Court decision, Americans can stand proud knowing that their nation is still a protector of basic civil rights and fundamental freedoms. Striking down the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act is a historic step forward toward achieving full equality in this country. The Supreme Court’s decision today reinforces the principle that we are all human beings, we are all created equal, and we all deserve the same treatment under the law. Nevertheless, we are far from perfect, and there is still so much more to be done to ensure that every American is granted full equality, regardless of what they look like, where they come from, or who they love.”
